History and Mythological Significance of Abhaneri
Abhaneri Festival

Formerly known as Abha Nagri, or the “City of Brightness,” Abhaneri was founded in the 8th–9th century CE by Raja Chand of the Nikumbha Dynasty. Abhaneri later prospered when the Gurjara-Pratihara rulers, well-known patrons of art and temple construction, came to power. The main attractions in the area are the Chand Baori stepwell, one of the largest and deepest in the nation, and the Harshat Mata Temple, which is devoted to the goddess of joy and happiness.

Legend has it that the goddess once radiated her light and happiness here, hence the village's name. Even today, the remains and sculptures of Abhaneri speak of a glorious past where history, mythology, and heritage intertwine with one another, which further adds great cultural value to Rajasthan tourism.

Importance of the Abhaneri Festival
Abhaneri Festival

The Abhaneri Festival in Rajasthan plays a very significant role in preserving and reviving old traditional performing arts that would otherwise become extinct.

What started back in 2008 is more than simply an entertainment event. It is rather a platform for rural talents and a way of handing down folk legacies to the newer generation.

In addition to showcasing the wealth of talent found in the Culture & Folk Dance Festival of Rajasthan, it puts a spotlight on a small village that would otherwise be overlooked on the tourist map and attracts attention from the rest of the world.

By bringing together artists, craftsmen, and audience members, the Abhaneri Mahotsav reinforces cultural pride, supports heritage conservation big time, and boosts local livelihoods, making it a significant part of Rajasthan Tourism.
