History of Jaisalmer War Museum

The Jaisalmer War Museum was opened to the public on 24 August 2015. Lieutenant General Ashok Singh, the General Officer Commanding of the Southern Command of the Indian Army, was present at the inauguration. The museum was created to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers, especially those involved in the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971.

Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews came up with the idea for the museum. His goal was to build a space that fosters patriotism and informs civilians about the military's history. The museum focuses particularly on the Battle of Laungewala, which took place in 1971 near the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan. In the battle, a small Indian infantry unit successfully defended against a large Pakistani tank attack.

Laungewala Hall : This gallery tells the story of the heroic Battle of Laungewala, which took place on the night of December 4, 1971, during the Indo-Pak war. The hall features a detailed account of how a small Indian post defended against a large armored Pakistani attack. Among the notable exhibits is the 106mm RCL Gun, which was crucial in stopping enemy tanks, along with a striking visual display of the battle as it happened.
Indian Army Hall : This gallery highlights India’s major military conflicts, including the wars of 1947-48, 1965, and 1999 (Kargil War). It showcases captured enemy equipment, weapons, and ammunition used in various battles. It also provides informative displays on the Indian Army's role in national development, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid.
