Gurudwara Singh Sabha

Located near the sacred Pushkar Lake, Gurudwara Singh Sabha Pushkar is a tranquil and spiritually significant site for Sikhs. It honors the visits of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji to Pushkar who visited here in 1509 and 1706 respectively. The gurudwara is one of the top places to visit in Pushkar and was formerly called Guru Nanak Dharmasala but is now known as Gurdwara Singh Sabha and functions as a branch of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Ajmer. It is housed in a double-storey flat-roofed building, which was inaugurated in 2005.

History of Gurudwara Singh Sabha

Gurudwara Singh Sabha, Pushkar stands as a testament to the sacred visits of two revered Sikh Gurus. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, visited Pushkar in 1509 during his spiritual journey across India. Later, in 1706, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, also visited the town while traveling through Rajasthan after the Battle of Chamkaur. During his stay, he was hosted by a local priest named Chetan Das.

The site sanctified by Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s presence came to be known as Gobind Ghat, although it has since been renamed Gandhi Ghat. However, a stone slab under a kiosk at the location still bears the original name "Gobind Ghat," inscribed in Gurumukhi, Devanagari, Persian, and Roman scripts. A Brahmin priest serving at the ghat, who maintains unshorn hair and wears a turban, is said to possess a historic hukamnama written on bhoj patra (birch bark), believed to have been bestowed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to Mahant Chetan Das. Another hukamnama in his possession references the five major gurdwaras of Amritsar, including the revered Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

In honor of these momentous visits, a gurdwara was originally built in the late 19th century. This structure was later demolished to make way for a grander, white marble edifice on a 6.24 acres land through the large-scale kar sewa of veteran Kar Sewak Baba Lakha Singh. The newly reconstructed Gurudwara Singh Sabha was inaugurated on October 25, 2005, continuing to preserve and celebrate the town’s deep spiritual connection with Sikh history.

Architecture & Design

The Gurudwara Singh Sabha features traditional Sikh architecture. It emphasizes simplicity and functionality. The white facade is topped with a simple dome and the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag. This design reflects the spiritual essence of the shrine. The prayer hall is large and tranquil, made to host devotees during daily services and religious events.

Inside, the Guru Granth Sahib is placed on a raised platform beneath a canopy. The priest also keeps an old hand-written copy of the Guru Granth Sahib. There are separate areas for langar, lodging, and bathing. These spaces serve pilgrims who visit this holy site.
