The temple is dedicated to Lord Varaha, the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who took the shape of a boar to save the Earth from the demon Hiranyaksha. Like many temples in Pushkar, it faced major damage during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who ordered its destruction. Later, in the 18th century, Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur rebuilt the temple.
